The City of Kemah Emergency Management continues to monitor the possible weather developments making their way towards our region. As we continue to track these developments, now is a good time to review your significant weather event preparedness plans.

In addition to our Emergency Preparedness document for a quick overview of what you will need to be aware of during events like this, we also highly recommend visiting www.GCOEM.org to download the Galveston County Emergency and Disaster Guide. It is filled with tips and information to help you prepare.

The City of Kemah urges you to please stay abreast of weather developments by following local weather news reports for Galveston County. And observing communications from the US National Weather Service Houston-Galveston Texas for the latest information.

The National Weather Service has produced the following information:

Summary

Changes since the last update:

  • Very few.  Slight timing adjustments.

Overview

Line of storms in advance of a cold front will push across the area Wednesday morning between 5am and noon. 
  • Main hazard: damaging winds. 
  • Secondary hazards: localized street flooding where poor drainage exists, hail, isolated tornadoes.

     

     

    What the radar might look like (HRRR model)


     

    Strong winds Wednesday-Friday

    • Increasing west and northwest winds are expected in the wake of the front and will persist into Friday. Wind Advisories may be required...especially Thursday when 30-40mph gusts are forecast.
    • Recommend securing inflatable and loose Halloween decorations and other outdoor objects that could be displaced in high winds. 

     

 

Marine and Coastal Hazards

  • Small Craft Advisories are in effect.
  • Winds will become west and northwest behind the cold front. 
  • High risk of rip currents Wednesday.
  • A Gale Watch is in effect heading into Thursday morning as northwesterly winds further increase. 
  • Tides: Strong offshore winds behind the front may lead to Low Water Advisories on Thursday, Friday, and possibly Saturday.
